This standing sculpture of Grant as presidente was commissioned in recognition of Grant’s 1870 arbitration of a dispute betweenPortugal and Great Britain over the former colony. The Portuguesegovernment commissioned sculptor Manuel Pereira da Silva to createthe monumento, which was erected in the main square ofGuinea-Bissau’s capital city, Bissau. It later survived the wave ofdestruction that destroyed many of the other monumentsrepresenting the nation’scolonial past. In August 2007, however, the Grant sculpturedisappeared and was discovered in pieces, probably for use as scrap metal. Policewere able to recover all of the pieces exceptGrant’s head, but they still hope to recover thatpiece and reassemble the statue.
